About the Author
Judy Beecher has an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Indiana University and a graduate degree in mathematics from Purdue University. She has taught at both the high school and college levels with many years of developmental math and precalculus teaching experience at Indiana University—Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). In addition to her career in textbook publishing, she enjoys traveling, spending time with her grandchildren, and promoting charity projects for a children's camp. Judy Penna received her undergraduate degree in mathematics from Kansas State University and her graduate degree in mathematics from the University of Illinois. Since then, she has taught at Indiana University—Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and at Butler University, and continues to focus on writing quality textbooks for undergraduate mathematics students. In her free time she likes to travel, read, knit and spend time with her children. Marvin Bittinger has been teaching math at the university level for more than thirty-eight years. Since 1968, he has been employed at Indiana University—Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), and is now professor emeritus of mathematics education. Professor Bittinger has authored over 190 publications on topics ranging from basic mathematics to algebra and trigonometry to applied calculus. He received his BA in mathematics from Manchester College and his PhD in mathematics education from Purdue University. Special honors include Distinguished Visiting Professor at the United States Air Force Academy and his election to the Manchester College Board of Trustees from 1992 to 1999. His hobbies include hiking in Utah, baseball, golf, and bowling. Professor Bittinger has also had the privilege of speaking at many mathematics conventions, most recently giving a lecture entitled "Baseball and Mathematics." In addition, he also has an interest in philosophy and theology, in particular, apologetics. Professor Bittinger currently lives in Carmel, Indiana with his wife Elaine. YOU DON'T NEED THE BOOK! YOU CAN TOTALLY TAKE THE CLASS AND BE FINE WITH JUST THE ACCESS CODE! BIG WASTE OF MONEY!
I'm back in college to finish engineering. After taking the college placement (I did really good on it), the college told me I could start in Calculus. I had calculus in the late 90's, but wanted to refresh on the basics. This book, being a textbook, is a great place to start for me to rebuild some things I'd forgotten. It's an easy read and seems well laid out. I'm reading the Trig book by the same authors now. And yes, I do all the calculations at the end of each chapter. I have old TI-81 and TI-82 from the 90's that I use for some of the graphing, most of my graphs are drawn by hand. Algebra is an easy math that I think most things should be done without a calculator. If you always need the calculator at this level, I wouldn't recommend a math-centric career field. If you're going into higher levels of math, use your brain more as it will pay off when you go into Calc or physics or chemistry.
This is an okay book for the typical college student who is taking the course because s/he has to and doesn't care. And there's probably no choice. For certain sections that need to be stressed (because most of the students are of the sort who find math hard or something they just hate and just have to get through it to graduate) because of how demanding the problems can be at this level, it can get really lacking in the number of examples.But ultimately, this book is grossly expensive for what it is. A College Algebra book covering these topics in this much space should not be the price it is, especially considering the 5th edition doesn't actually add much new in spite of what it claims to. The problems aren't really varied, either. There are a lot of good ways to organize your problems so students can clearly differentiate between difference of squares and perfect square trinomials and how to factor these using the super simple "memorize this formula," but this book fails spectacularly, and it's not the first time this book does that.It just comes off as more of a "Hey, I wrote these lessons. Now I'll use a Random Problem Generator to create the problems!" from the author. This is never excusable because problems should have some purpose in mind, either with clear progression (easy -> medium -> hard), development (rote work -> word problems and understanding), or motivation (neat examples). You won't get that here.
This textbook was exactly what I needed for college. My college is online so normally I get my books electronically, but for math I preferred a physical copy. It worked great but now that it's an outdated edition and nobody is using it anymore, I can't sell it. Oh well, at least it got the job done.
I ordered this manual with my textbook and still paid less than the bookstore wanted for just the textbook. This manual is very useful and will be well worn by the end of the summer. It not only gives you the answers and the steps that were used to get to the answer, it also gives verbage on how to work the steps. If there is a formula involved, it will state the formula first, then tell what numbers to plug where (especially helpful for word problems). Keep in mind that the solutions manual, like the book, only has solutions for the odd problems. This is not an issue for me due to the fact that my instructor only assigns the odd numbers. I would suggest this manual for anyone taking algebra.
Had to buy it for a class. I rely on the books more than the lecture to learn math, and this one did a decent job.

You still have to buy a new subscription to the mathLab. I thought it was included. kind of misleading title. I could've gotten the book alone for like thirty quid less easy. rip off.
